OUR STORY

Victor and Felicia Cerna founded Outside The Wire ATX in 2023 after Victor was honorably discharged from the military.

During the transition from active duty to veteran, Victor found himself in a very dark place. The abrupt loss of camaraderie and shared purpose he had experienced during service left him feeling alone and without direction; the isolation was suffocating. As he struggled to connect with a world that seemed foreign and indifferent to his experiences, and without a community to turn to or resources to navigate the transition, he found himself grappling with suicide. His experience underscores the importance of this organization and the support our military, veterans, first responders, and their families need, ensuring that no one faces this journey alone or loses sight of their worth, potential, and God’s love.

Outside The Wire ATX’s mission is more critical than ever. Approximately 24 veterans die every day by suicide, and 7 in 10 first responders say mental health services are seldom or never utilized.

Animal therapy provides a powerful and holistic approach to healing that has been proven to trigger the release of calming neurotransmitters, helping to reduce anxiety and stress. By pairing our heroes with animals who have been saved from abuse and neglect, we help restore healing, well-being, and companionship in the lives of both animals and people.

Today, we are proud to be filling the gaps to ensure we’re serving those that serve(d) others by providing a space where our heroes can come together, share their experiences, and find solace in knowing that they’re not alone in their struggles. We’re here to help. That is our difference.

PURPOSE

Outside The Wire ATX gives veterans, first responders, and their families a place to slow down and find peace again.

Service changes people, whether you deployed or not. The pace, pressure, the things you see, and the things you cannot unsee, it all sticks. Most of us don’t need a couch or a lecture. WE just need something that makes sense again, with people who have been through it too.

That’s what this place is for. We use the land, the animals, and the work that comes with both to help people find rhythm and purpose again. It’s not therapy.

We’re Christian-led, and our faith keeps us grounded. We don’t push it on anyone, but it’s at the core of why we show up— to serve, to build, and to remind people of God’s love.

Our purpose is simple: build community and help people start to feel steady again — in body, mind, and spirit.
